Feline Sneezing

Feline Sneezing

Sneezing is normally a sign that your cat’s respiratory system is functioning properly. However, doing so excessively could mean that there’s a problem. There are various things that can cause excessive feline sneezing. Here are some of the most common.

Airways

A change in your cat’s airways can cause him to start sneezing a lot. This situation can occur if a fungal infection occurs in the nasal passages and causes problems. Nasal polyps and tumors can also be to blame. Changes in the airways is usually seen in older cats.

Rhinotracheitis

The rhinotracheitis virus can be responsible if your cat starts to sneeze a lot. This is the virus that causes a herpes-1 infection in felines. Affected kittens can suffer permanent damage to the linings in their nose. Sneezing can be difficult to control when caused by this virus.

Infection

One of the leading causes of excessive feline sneezing is an upper-respiratory infection. An infection can be caused by various viruses such as the Parainfluenza virus or Adenovirus.

Your cat can easily become infected if he comes into contact with an animal infected with one of these highly contagious viruses. Besides sneezing, your cat can also experience mucus discharge, coughing, and swollen glands.

Allergies

Cat sneezing can also be due to allergies. Substances and chemicals around your home can irritate your cat and cause him to start sneezing. Common substances include cigarette smoke, perfume, and cleaning chemicals. Cats that are allergic to pollen will also experience sneezing episodes during the spring and summer.
