Feline pneumonia occurs when there is inflammation in your cat’s lung. This is a serious condition but one which can be treated successfully. However, if the disease progresses, it can be life-threatening.
Causes
Pneumonia in cats usually develops as the result of a viral infection. This viral infection affects the lower respiratory tract, but can lead to pneumonia where bacteria present a problem. Common viruses that lead to feline pneumonia include feline calicivirus and parainfluenza virus.
Symptoms
If your cat develops this condition, you should be able to notice easily. Most cats appear to be extremely ill. They will refuse to eat and drink, which can cause dehydration. As pneumonia progresses, your cat will start to have trouble breathing. He will also develop a fever.
Treatment
Most cases of feline pneumonia can be treated with an antibiotic since they’re caused by a bacterial infection. You will need to make sure that you don’t discontinue the use of the antibiotic too soon. Doing so may allow bacteria to survive and become resistant to the medication. Most importantly, the veterinarian will check to see if your cat is getting enough oxygen. If not, he will be placed on oxygen therapy.
There are a few other things you will need to do for your cat if he has feline pneumonia. You should provide him with a dry and warm are to relax in. It’s also a good idea to use a humidifier in the room. Also, you will need to prevent him for exercising too hard. This will only make it more difficult for him to breathe.
