Feline acne is characterized by the formation of blackheads on your cat’s chin. The condition can be permanent throughout your cat’s life or it may go away and return periodically. Some cats only have acne once in their lifetime.

Causes

There is no exact cause known for feline acne, but there are various factors that seem to be associated with the condition. They include poor grooming, dermatitis, food allergies, and a suppressed immune system. Also, your cat may develop feline acne if he uses a plastic bowl since its porous and can trap bacteria which will get on your cat’s chin. Acne can also develop if your cat produces excessive amounts of oils and the hair follicles don’t function as they should.

Symptoms

Symptoms of feline acne are very mild in most cases, so you may not notice them. Blackheads will form on your cat’s lips and chin. They may develop into small abscesses which will break open and form crusts. Your cat may also lose hair and a swollen chin in severe cases of feline acne. The cat will often be seen scratching his chin because it’s itchy. Unfortunately, this only causes more damage.

Treatment

In the case of feline acne is very mild, the veterinarian may choose not to treat it. Other cases are treated with special shampoos that help get rid of excess oils. An antibiotic applied twice a day will also help get rid of feline acne. Corticosteroids also prove useful when there is excessive inflammation.

Prevention

There are a few things you can do to prevent feline acne. If your cat uses a plastic bowl, you should replace it with a glass or stainless steel design. The plastic is porous and can trap bacteria which will get on your cat’s chin. Also, your cat may be allergic to certain dyes and plastics that may be used to make the bowl. It’s also a good idea to use a shallow dish.

If your cat has poor grooming habits, he will be more likely to develop feline acne. If this is the case, then you should clean your cat’s chin after he eats. You should also wash his water and food bowls on a daily basis.
